There is a surefire way to resolve the stalemate in Washington between the so-called political establishment and the upstarts with too much power tea party. They are enjoying their clout a little too much and destroying what little progress is being made. The Republicans are trying to woo both extremes at once - the social right wingers who are losing ground and the economic tea party narrow visionaries. President Obama, the great conciliator, is caught between warring toddlers. Ever try to reason with a distraught two-year-old?
The solution requires some coordination among a lot of others, not always known for their ability to get along, but if we want our country to move forward - or more specifically our elected officials to at least pretend to do their job then the solution is simple. No more press coverage, not one press conference, sound bite or guest appearance on any media show, a total blackout. Not one politician gets one second of air time until they manage to pass a budget, raise the debt ceiling, agree on spending cuts and yes, raise some revenue.
It's almost guaranteed that if you take away the media oxygen for their ridiculous postering - and it has to be total to be effective - then when no one will acknowledge them until they do their job they will immediately do their job in order to be the first one back on the air to claim total victory. Fine, let them, but give this country the respect it may not deserve but desperately needs and do something other than dueling sound bites for the outrageous perks legislators have over the years granted themselves.
The media are enablers. The more they allow politicians to spew their specific tirade the more ridiculous everyone gets because the bar of stupid behavior keeps getting raised. Someone needs to say stop. In a way that's been the tea party, formed from disgust with the system of profligate spending and no responsibility. Passing laws without the money to pay for them. Letting Wall Street bring down our economy with barely a pause in their irresponsible behavior. But the tea party is more about anger than solutions. They are so angry - justifiably - than calm enough to lay out a workable plan. Add in the Boehner-Cantor power struggle and the bad air swirls.
So media people, get together and boycott every politician until they do the job they were elected to do. Trust me, they willl do anything to get back on the air to espouse their wind including gasp, their job.
