Imagine this - you're an undeclared Democratic super delegate. Everyone you ever met is pressuring you to join their team. You're courted, far more than your partner has even thought of doing. He knows he'll have to live with you if he builds you up that high. But politicians or their staffs have no such qualms. They make lots of promises, some they keep, some they don't. Right now you are the most important person in their world. You feel giddy, holding out for the best possible deal. You think you're smarter than they are, that you'll be, oh I don't know, a cabinet member? State chair? Invited to the White House for a small but important gathering? Call him Barry? Hand over phone to friend: sorry, gotta take, the prez?
Maybe. But while someone is peeling your grapes for you, and asking what your T-shirt size is, remember, a few dozen delegates down and you're not even stale toast. You have no bargaining position. You're yesterday's news. So why hold out? What you really deep down secretly want - and boy, is this tricky - is to be THE LAST DELEGATE THAT PUTS HIM OVER THE TOP! Balloons, the lead on all the blogs, maybe Keith Olbermannn will mention you on his show! Tip toe tip toe, one step at a time, get closer closer but not quite yet. Nerves of steel silent yet ready to pounce.
Instead, like those circus clowns coming out of the tiny car, they just keep coming, the last 20 in a rush to be last, one big heap on Democratic humanity, all elbows and excuses. The slow steady ones, those who know what they're doing and just do it, they know their place. So memo to superdelegates holding out: It's downhill like this week. You'll be lucky to get a chair at the convention. You want to get out there now. Sure, you'll miss some glory, boasting rights that you put him over, all kinds of swag. But fame is fleeting and this is about him and the party and the country, not you. You've had your fun, your fantasy of power, now it's time to step aside and do what you're supposed to do, break a stalemate and put a Dem in the White House. That is your purpose. Get with the program.
